Lowering Your Electric Bills: 2 Stories That Will Surprise You

No one wants to pay a lot for their utilities. In fact, if given a choice, most of us would rather spend that money on just about anything else. Month after month, year after year, we pay our hard-earned dollars to utility companies for the privilege of having light, heat, and water. Two homeowners thought their astronomical utilities were just a part of homeownership until Farnen & Dermer stepped in and showed them what was possible.

Lower your electric bill with a new HVAC system. Don’t just take our word for it, hear it straight from a happy customer in this video:

Being Proactive Pays Off…

Heat pumps are known for transferring heat into or out of your home, depending on the time of year. While these systems are efficient when they are new, as they get older, they tend to lose their ability to move heat efficiently. One customer had two 20-year-old heat pumps in his house. When one started acting up, he called us to diagnose and fix the problem. Based on their age, our service technician recommended the customer replace both heat pumps with complete HVAC systems that would be more effective at heating and cooling the home. The customer decided to take advantage of our promotional financing and agreed to replace the old heat pumps with new, efficient HVAC systems. What he did not expect was that his $800 a month utility bill would shrink by more than half, putting money back in his pocket every month with new heating and cooling equipment in his home.

…and Pays Off Big

Even though we know the difference it makes in our customers’ lives, we don’t often hear about what happens long after our professionals install or service an HVAC system. One customer is the exception to this. We installed a new HVAC system into his home four years ago, lowering his utility bills by more than half. The utility savings this customer experienced paid for his system in four years. Since he is making sure the entire system receives routine maintenance, it should last a minimum of 10 more years. Since he is on “budget pay” with the utility company where he pays the same amount each month, we get a “thank you” phone call every year when he receives his overpayment refund.

Why the Big Difference?

What most people don’t realize is that the incremental cost increases in your utilities every year are only partly due to rate increases. Since an HVAC system is one of the largest users of electricity in a home, its efficiency (or lack thereof) can be seen on your utility bills. You may even notice a $20, $50 or $100 increase more per year, but eventually, the cost of using your HVAC system every month will exceed the cost to replace it and use it. At this point, energy efficiency credits, utility rebates and monthly cost savings you receive from having a new system will make it less expensive than simply running your old one.

Curious what that point is? Give Farnen & Dermer a call and let our certified HVAC technicians evaluate your current system and give you an idea of how much you could be saving.
