Does Indoor Air Quality Suffer in the Winter?

February 22nd, 2012

Even the cleanest, most immaculately kept homes suffer from poor indoor air quality from time to time. There are irritants, allergens, and other airborne particles floating around in the air of your home. Those irritants can make their way into your respiratory system, exacerbating existing and unpleasant respiratory problems, like asthma.

Indoor air pollution is colorless and odorless, making it almost impossible to detect. But trust us, it’s there. Indoor pollutants include:

  • Dander from pets
  • Dust mites
  • Mold spores
  • Smoke – especially if people smoke in your home
  • VOCs, or volatile organic compounds, which are emitted from common household items like cleaning products, paints and varnishes
  • Bacteria and viruses that can make you sick
  • Many other microscopic things

Is indoor Air Quality Worse in the Winter?

Well, not quite. But you do notice it more for several reasons, including:

  1. You are Indoors More: This is a no-brainer. The more you are indoors, the more indoor air quality will affect you.
  2. Your Home is Sealed: In the winter, we tend to keep our windows and doors shut as much as possible, keeping indoor air pollutants bottled up in your home.
  3. More Pollutants, More Problems: When indoor air pollutants have nowhere to go and accumulate, they become more highly concentrated and can affect your health much more easily.
  4. Moisture: Poor ventilation and airflow also encourages moisture to collect in the home. And too much humidity is a bad thing, leading to the growth of mold and mildew.

One way to combat poor indoor air quality is to have your HVAC system professionally serviced, ensuring it filters out as many harmful pollutants as possible. This is where Farnen & Dermer can help!

The Ten Items You Should Always Have In Your Car During Winter

February 15th, 2012

Even though the last few months have been rather mild compared to the past several Maryland winters, it is still important to be prepared. If you get caught in a bad snowstorm, are you ready? The following tools will help you survive almost any winter weather accident, no matter how bad the storm.

Blankets: If your car gets stuck in the snow and you are unable to get it out, staying warm is your number one priority. This is where the blankets come into play. Bundle up and wait for help!

Flares: Help rescuers see you! It is easy to get lost amongst the constantly falling snow. Flares will help you stand out.

First Aid Kit: If someone in your vehicle gets injured in an accident, your first aid kit will come in handy.

Jumper Cables: These are important to keep in your car at all times, not just during the winter.

A Bag of Sand (or Kitty Litter): Stuck in the snow and can’t seem to get any traction? Well, you are in luck…if you have a bag of sand in your trunk. Spread the sand in front of your tires to help you gain traction.

Ice Scraper: This will constant come in handy throughout the winter.

Flashlight (and extra batteries): A flashlight is great for several reasons. It will not only help you see what’s going on, but it will also help others see you.

Small Tool Kit: Make sure you have everything you need to change a tire and perform minor mechanical jobs.

Small Shovel: When you are in a bind, a shovel will help you dig out.

Remember, it is better to be safe than sorry. So make sure you have the above items in your car, truck, or SUV at all times this winter!

The Importance of Carbon Monoxide Detectors

February 7th, 2012

When you encounter Carbon Monoxide, the CO combines with hemoglobin – the oxygen-carrying agent in red blood cells – robbing your brain of oxygen, which may result in death. Even if you do survive serious CO poisoning, you may (and probably will) still experience long-term complications, such as memory impairment and other serious illnesses.

Many of the reported cases of carbon monoxide poisoning could have been easily avoided with a carbon monoxide detector.

Facts About Carbon Monoxide and CO Detectors

  • CO is colorless, tasteless and odorless – making it impossible to detect without a CO detector.
  • Carbon monoxide is produced from incomplete combustion of fossil fuels.
  • Remember, CO detectors do not serve as smoke detectors and vice versa.
  • If you only have one CO detector, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recommends it be located near the bedroom, where it can easily wake you if you are asleep.
  • For additional protection, install multiple detectors on each level of the home and in every bedroom.
  • Do not install a CO detector directly above or beside fuel-burning appliances.
  • According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), carbon monoxide’s specific gravity is 0.9657, making it almost the same weight as air. This means it will rise with warm air.
  • System-connected CO detectors can be wired to either a security or fire panel, and are monitored by a central station.

Flu Prevention Begins with Proper HVAC Maintenance

February 1st, 2012

As the H1N1 influenza virus constantly threatens the health of both you and your family, proper HVAC maintenance becomes increasingly important. Now you didn’t know that HVAC cleaning and maintenance could improve the health conditions of your home, did you? That’s right!  Proper HVAC system maintenance will not only prolong the life of your heating and cooling system and ensure that it is working as efficiently as possible, it will also help decrease the spread of potentially harmful contaminants throughout your home.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) even put out a presentation entitle “Swine H1NI Influenza A: Transmission of Viruses in Indoor Air: HVAC System Protection Options” (pdf). The report discusses the importance of HVAC systems and their role in circulating the flu virus throughout homes and other buildings.

Suggestions to Improve HVAC Performance

  • The EPA recommends using UV-C lights combined with mechanical filters to kill the virus.
  • Probably the most basic flu prevention maneuver is to upgrade your HVAC filtration system to high efficiency air filters.
  • A Farnen and Dermer Maintenance Agreement is the perfect way to not only ensure that your HVAC system is working properly, but also that it is not spreading harmful contaminants through your home – putting you and your family at risk.

Farnen and Dermer Tips for Healthy Living: Why Are Vitamins Important?

January 24th, 2012

The consumption of vitamins is essential for the proper functioning of the body. There are 13 vitamins in all: vitamin A; vitamin B complex, which includes thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin B6, folic acid, vitamin B12, pantothenic acid, and biotin; and vitamins C, D, E, and K. These vitamins are found everywhere, from foods like vegetables and fruits to dairy products, such as milk. Still, people fail to consume the proper amount of vitamins in their every day diets. When this happens, nutritional supplementation becomes extremely important.

What are the Most Important Vitamins to take?

The truth is that they are all important. Each serves a distinct purpose, purposes that we have outlined below.

B Complex Vitamins: These serve as necessary cofactors for metabolic reactions that synthesize and break down amino acids, fats and carbohydrates, generate cellular energy, construct cell membranes, produce neurotransmitters and hormones, and detoxify potentially harmful chemicals.

Vitamin A: It is used as a cofactor for rhodopsin, an important light-sensing protein in vision; vitamin A is also used to control the expression of certain genes, and can act as a fat-soluble antioxidant.

Vitamins C and E: These are essential antioxidants.

•      Vitamin C prevents oxidative damage in the aqueous portions of cells.

•      Vitamin E prevents the oxidation of fats.

Vitamin D: It is important for the uptake and balance of minerals and the proper function of the kidneys and cardiovascular system.

Vitamin K: This vitamin is a necessary participant in synthesis of several proteins that mediate both coagulation and anticoagulation. Vitamin K deficiency is manifest as a tendency to bleed excessively.

Are you consuming enough of each vitamin in your everyday diet? Consult a nutritionist to find out!

Benefits of an HVAC Maintenance Agreement

January 19th, 2012

If your HVAC system breaks down in the middle of the winter, you will be left out in the cold…literally. So don’t let this happen to you; take the following precautions:

  1. Stock up on furnace filters.
  2. Regularly change your furnace filters. A filthy filter will cause your furnace to work harder to keep your home at a comfortable temperature. And the harder your furnace works, the more money you pay and the more wear and tear your unit takes.
  3. Call an HVAC professional to inspect your furnace and clean ducts.
  4. Consider a Farnen and Dermer Maintenance Agreement.

A Farnen and Dermer Service Agreement helps you avoid costly breakdowns. Performing simple maintenance on your furnace is crucial in not only prolonging its life, but also in ensuring that it works properly and efficiently.

The Importance of Attic Insulation

January 11th, 2012

Attic insulation is important all year round in each and every homeowner’s fight to keep their home comfortable. In the winter, attic insulation prevents warm air from escaping, keeping your home nice and toasty during even the most frigid months. During the summer months, attic insulation keeps hot air out, allowing you to beat the summer heat. But on top of that, properly insulating your attic makes your home more energy efficient and saves you money.

By helping to maintain a comfortable temperature in your home, attic insulation keeps your HVAC system from working extra hard to produce the same results. This means that you will save money every month on your energy bills. But how can you tell when you need additional attic insulation?

First, you will need to make your way to the attic. Next, look across the span of the attic. If you cannot see your floor joists and your insulation is evenly distributed throughout the attic, you probably have enough insulation. Adding more would just be a waste of money. But if your insulation level is just below your floor joists, you should add more.

So what are you waiting for? Start insulating!

Insulation levels are specified by what is known as R-Value, the insulation’s ability to resist heat flow. According to Energy Star, the recommended insulation level for most attics is to insulate to R-38 or about 10 to 14 inches, depending on insulation type.

The Benefits of Weatherstripping

January 6th, 2012

Older houses were not made with energy efficiency in mind. That, combined with the natural aging of your home, may lead to a drafty house and significantly higher heating and cooling bills than you would like. If this is the case, you have several options: deal with a drafty home and pricey energy bills, move, install replacement windows, remodel, or have some fun with weatherstripping.

We are guessing that you may be in favor of the last and, not surprisingly, cheapest home improvement solution listed above.

Even a little draft can cost you big bucks. In fact, air leaks account, on average, for 30-40% of the heat lost from your home. That is a lot of wasted energy! So you can see why making your home as airtight as possible is your first step in fighting high energy bills. This is where weatherstripping can help. It seals the gaps around doors, windows and other areas of your house, preventing air infiltration and increasing your home’s energy efficiency.

You should place weatherstripping around:

•      All exterior doors

•      Attic openings

•      All operable windows

So what are you waiting for? Start weatherstripping so you can start saving money!

If you have any questions, contact Farnen & Dermer by calling 410-902-0020 or click here today!

Simple Ways to Save Energy (and Money) Around the House

December 29th, 2011

In today’s economy, many homeowners are looking for any way possible to save, save, save. Fortunately, there are some very simple ways to save energy around the home. And less energy means less money.

You will be thanking us when you get your electricity bill next month!

Turn Off Lights: Let’s look at the facts. Did you know that lighting accounts for about 11% of a home’s energy bills? Turning off lights that are not needed will both extend the lifetime of those bulbs and cut your energy spending.

Energy-Efficient Light Bulbs: More light bulbs! Like we said already, lighting does account for 11% of your electric bills, so it is kind of a big issue. But lucky for you, we have another simple solution: CFLs. No, not the Canadian Football League, we are talking about compact fluorescent light bulbs. These energy efficient bulbs use about 75% less energy than your standard incandescent bulbs. Pretty neat, huh?

Motion Sensors: Installing motion sensors is a smart solution to your energy woes. Now lights will automatically turn on and off when you enter or leave a room. No more flipping a switch…let technology do the work for you.

Turn Off Your Computer: Your computer uses energy even in sleep or hibernation mode. The only way to truly stop its energy guzzling is to turn it off. And turning off your computer every night can save you an average of $90 of electricity a year.

Time to Get a Laptop: Not only are they more convenient than desktops, but they draw 15 to 25 watts during use, compared to the 150 watts by a desktop computer and monitor.

Energy Monitor: Consider purchasing an advanced energy monitoring device. These nifty contraptions will actually track your home’s energy use in real time. And according to one company, you can save 15 – 20% on each bill with the help of one of these devices.

Energy Audit: Home much energy do you currently use? A home energy audit will help you determine how much energy you are using and will identify ways to reduce it through better insulation and other such home improvement techniques.

Programmable Thermostat: The average household spends $2,200 a year on energy bills, about half of which goes to heating and cooling. Using a programmable thermostat properly can save you an average of around $180 a year. These thermostats offer four pre-programmed setting to regulate your home’s temperature, whether you are at home, asleep or away. You can use these settings or customize your settings as appropriate. The key is to establish a program that reduces heating and cooling in your home when you don’t need it.

So what are you waiting for? Get to work and start saving!
